When you cut Garlic no tears come out but you cut onion tears come out..?Do you avoid eating things with onions and garlic because of what ...GOD? answer by: Krishna's Sadhak, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:03:16 pm Ans. No garlic or onions? What's up with that?
They're satanic. But really, the Vedas say (somewhere in there) that garlic and onion are aphrodisiacs which inflame one's passions. If you weren't too chicken to eat a whole bulb of garlic at once you'd know this is true. But the food still tastes mmm-Krishna-good.
Some time people do believe that as far as these are vegeterian and does not comes under non-veg then why to stop eating this ?
Let's discuss and expolre this more and pls write something strong so that i can show to my husband too. he left Non-Veg but not ready to leave onion and garlic. answer by: Bhakti, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:04:09 pm Ans. Nice topic. First of all we have to understand what should we eat. We should only eat things that are offered to Krishna. So we have to figure out what food can serve to Krishna and what food we cannot.
Since onion, garlic come under the category of \"tamas\" food, ie, they have v strong odor, we don\'t serve those kind of food to Krishna. In some Vaishnav sect. Krishna is served in the form of bal-krishna or Vatsalya bhav. Since small shildren are not given nion garlic due to its strong flavor, we dont serve the same to Krishna also due to the vatsalya bhaav. Since Krishna does not eat onion garlic, we don\'t eat it either.
Another reason is that, what we eat should be considered for how it will affect our service for Krishna. Since ppl stink (and I mean literally) after eating onion garlic, their perspiration stinks, their mouth stinks.... we have to aviod it since Krishna will not be comfortable with stinky ppl around him.
The bottom line is - What ever we eat, do, speak etc. should be thought of in terms of whether Krishna will like it or not. And the best way to know is - yatha dehe, tatha deve. Meaning, we should think that if we don\'t like certain things, we should certainly not do it to Krishna and be extra careful.
I hope that helps. answer by: Ruchira, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:04:25 pm Ans. i know i'm quite younger than u all, but still..i'm sorry to say..i do not believe this all. It's ur greatness that u do not offer God onions and garlic.but i believe, that even if u do,that too whole heartedly,God will accept that happily..remember how He had eaten the raw rice that Sudama had bought for Him?the feelings matter..nothing else.He considers love the most important thing.so,even if u give Him anything,be it small or big..He is impressed by the feelings u have for Him...not the food that u offer to Him!! even if u offer loads of food to Him,without any feeling of devotion or love,He wouldn't be THAT pleased..but if u offer Him even a single grain, with devotion,He will be immensely haapy.I believe that the food u eat, the clothes u wear, have nothing to do with what God feels...the Lord only wants love..devotion..that's all He wants..and i believe in what i said.
sorry once again,if u all think i'm wrong.but i stand by what i said.

Ruchiri, if what you said is wrong then standing by it would not be very wise, would it?
You are right when you say that Krsna can have whatever He desires including garlic/onions .. As he states in the Gita, He is above material contamination..
But, we are still struggling with our our material contamination. Consuming Garilc/Onion increases our lusty desires and Lust as Krsna says, is our greatest enemy in this material world.
So, thats why Vaishnavas refrain from eating onion/garlic. answer by: Bhakti, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:05:11 pm Ans. @Ruchira
Ruchira, you are right but the example of Krishna being served raw rice etc. are for a very high level devotees. Fallen souls like us whose mind is always engaged in material world should not take such examples and conclude that we can serve onion-garlic to Krishna.
In Bhakti-marg, we have to make maximum efforts to give Krishna as less discomfort as possible. For example, there are two ways the highest Bhakta can be with God 1) by going near the God 2) Bringing God to his heart. The 2nd option is also valid, and God will come to a devotee's heart. But doing so is less convenient to Krishna. The devotee should rather make an effort to go to God rahter than calling God to him.
similarly, Krishna will eat anything you serve to him with love, even raw rice and the skin of banana (Vidur's wife did that out of love) but are we at that stage to do that????
Even after reaching the highest stage of love and bhakti for Krishna, one MUST think of Krishna's comfort, not his own. answer by: Madhava, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:05:37 pm Ans. my 2 cents
The ritualistic activities that we follow and the regulations that are made were concluded by the Great Bona fide Acharyas.
As i went through this topic i understood that many of the comments are concluding that as krishna is not convinient with onion and garlic.so we too follow it,that is very good way of understanding.
my opinion is to follow the orders established by great acharyas instead of givind our mind a chance to explore and know the things and providing space for more mental speculation.
Even we find the onion and garlic to be tasty,so giving up also will be concluded as an austerity.as our aim is to detach from sense gratification.
Krishna Consciousness moment is a step by step understanding of knowing that Nothing is ours even our mind.
we have a fine and a smooth established way to progressing in spirituality and to see krishna directly one day.
Chant Hare Krishna .please spiritual master........and be Happy
i am sorry if i hurt the feelings of any of the devotees. answer by: Krishna's Sadhak, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:06:02 pm Ans. From Puranic Encylopedia by Vettam Mani
Solar eclipse according to the Puranas. The Devas and the asuras jointly churned Kshirabdhi wherefrom emerged Dhanvantari with the Amrtakumbha (pot of nectar).
But an asura mayavi (magician) called Saimhikeya absconded to Patala with the Amrtakumbha, which nobody noticed, as everybody was busy with dividing other divine objects. Only after the mayavi's disappearance was it noticed that the Amrtakumbha was missing. At once Mahavisnu assumed the figure of a beautiful woman, got back the Kumbha and gave it to devas.
The devas began drinking the amrta when, at the instance of some other devas, Saimhikeya, the mayavi, assuming the form of an old Brahmin reached svarga, got a share of the amrta and began to drink it.
Surya and Candra (Sun and Moon) who were on guard at the gates divined the secret of the 'old Brahmin' and informed Mahavisnu about it. He cut the throat of the pseudo-Brahmin with his Sudarsana Cakra. But, half of the nectar he had drunk stayed above the throat and the other half below it. Therefore, though the head and the trunk were severed they remained alive. These two parts, in course of time, evolved as Rahu and Ketu answer by: Krishna's Sadhak, posted on: 28th January 2011 12:06:25 pm Ans. Contd....
When the throat was cut some blood dropped on the ground, and became the red onion and the white onion (garlic) respectively. So both onion and garlic originated from the throat and blood of the demons or asuras, thus their consumption brings us closer to tamo guna (mode of ignorance) which characterizes the nature of the demons and thus is detrimental to bhakti. (Kamba Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda and Bhagavata, Astama Skandha. Kamba Ramayana is a Tamil text by poet Kambar.)
Some persons also say that red carrots also fall into this equation being associated with the above stories but the fact is that this is incorrect as red carrots are a hybrid vegetable; they were crossed to form the red colouration for the King of Holland, an Orangeman in the 16th century.
There are several colours of “carrots” in their natural state, but the vegetable that we know today, as a carrot cannot be the one referred to in the above stories, as it was not in existence. So Garlic, Onion,Nonveg comes into Thamasa.....which increase our lusty desire...and tends to do things that are sinful..See...our souls r very purathana...they tied up with some thousand janmas samskaras...so its not very easy to walk to God side....For that we need sadhana...this sadhana is possible with sathvika food....unless we cant control our feelings and acts lead to sins....since v all human beings its difficult to control our acts of sins....when we control right from the beginning it is easy to get close to shri krishna...so at first we have to control this from food stuff...then v slowly can extend to other things.....this is for testing...u just see without taking garlic and onion for a weeek...
see our heart slowly become tender...we dont get unnecessary shdgunas..kama,,krodha,,,moha...etc... and take moong dal in whatever the form...for 1 week continuously in ur food...see the difference....it melts our heart...we vll be so mercyful..kind...very soft spoken..etc...just see the difference...by doing this... |
